Thanks so much everyone for all your birthday wishes. I had a really lovely day. It's been abnormally warm and sunny for late October here - cloudless blue sky and sun and the temp up to 21C (70F)!! [img]graemlins/sun.gif[/img] We went out to a the home of the Rothschilds - Waddesdon Manor. It's built in the style of a french chateau and OMG the treasures contained within it! Paintings by Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough and Guardi to name but a few, beautiful Sevres porcelain, tapestries and carpets dating back some 350 years and still in almost pristine condition. Furniture belonging to Louis XIV, XV and XVI including an exquisite writing desk belonging to Marie Antoinette. Everything was in such beautiful condition. Silver from George III's reign and rock crystal glasses. It was a real feast for the eyes. Tables made of pietra dura from Italy, Dutch paintings, mediaeval arms and jewellery, the list of things was endless.

We had a very nice lunch there including sampling a very nice bottle of Rothschild wine and then went outside to view the gardens. When we got there we were in for a surprise because the parterre (terrace) was closed due to filming. Apparently they were filming a drama starring Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II and Martin Sheen as Tony Blair!! We actually saw them film a couple of scenes there and I presume this will be shown on TV's here some time next year. Later in the evening we went out for a very nice Italian meal.
